YM Sailing was formed when two talented sailors joined forces with a common goal in mind — to promote the sport of sailing within Canada. Fortunately, this also meant being able to sail full time. When the pair were faced with the common dilemma of what to do after youth sailing, they found themselves in the same position as many others in Canada — unsure how to continue sailing, so took up coaching instead.
The pair began missing competitive racing and YM Sailing was quickly born. The initial goal was to represent Canada at the Paris 2024 Olympics in the Men’s 470 Class. After a change to the Olympic Class 470 made it a mixed event for 2024 (the boat must be sailed with one man and one woman), the two had to decide between quitting or putting all efforts towards Tokyo 2020. As the two had already left competitive sailing once, they knew they couldn’t do it again. Josh and Mike are now fully committed to representing Canada at not only the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but future Olympics as well (whether they are still sailing together or not).
The team is quickly improving but needs all the support they can get. Sailing is amongst the most expensive sports and doing it at an Olympic level is no easy feat. Unfortunately, in the sport of sailing talent and financial accessibility are both important factors in a team’s success. We have the talent, but we need your help to make it happen.

The team is focused on improving their level of sailing as fast as possible. They have worked hard to make qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics very achievable, although they must continue working to be able to compete with the best on the world stage.
The team has committed to intensive training alongside some of the best 470 teams in the world (including but not limited to the top USA and Russian teams). The pair will be attending many events over the next year including the 2019 470 World Championships and Sailing World Cup Events with a hard focus on improving every day.
The team’s goal is to qualify Canada for a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this coming January 2020, and then to qualify themselves to represent the country in the early spring of 2020. In doing so, the team hopes to not only promote the sport of sailing both internationally and within Canada, but to also promote 470 dinghy sailing.
Whether that is Josh or Mike’s future mixed campaign for the 2024 and later Olympics, or ones even further down the line, the goal is to create a system to build a successful 470 program in Canada.
